The traditional New Year’s Meeting, organized every year by ITU Rectorate, was held on January 10, 2018 at ITU Ayazağa Campus Süleyman Demirel Cultural Center. ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet KARACA, ITU Board Members, ITU-TRNC Rector Prof. Dr. Ercan KAHYA, academicians and guests attended this meeting.

 

Istanbul Technical University (ITU), which is getting ready to celebrate its 245th anniversary, welcomed 2018 with spirit of unity and solidarity at the New Year Meeting, where new projects have also been discussed. During the meeting, it was stated that ITU is the basis of technological improvements, accelerator of cultural developments and the name of science.

 

The event, which is presented by ITU Radio General Director Süha ÇALKİVİK, started with a movie screening called “ITU: from A to Z”. ITU Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet KARACA gave the opening speech of the meeting. KARACA talked about the future activities and projects of the university and shared important information about new developments which students will benefit and new ideas for improving the quality of living for academicians and administrative personnel. The rector also stressed the international success of ITU and said; “Just like everything else in the world, Turkey and universities in Turkey are changing; evolving in different aspects. Accordingly, expectations also change. Therefore, universities cannot administered, education cannot be given, and research objectives cannot be set with the system of thought of the 80s, 90s, or even the 2000s.”

 

Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet KARACA explained the goals of ITU with these words: “As a Quality and Research University, our research team will organize meetings with each department starting from the beginning of February. To improve the research, more effective use of the laboratory will be provided. In order to realize the projects, all activities will continue rapidly.”

 

After the speech of the Rector, plaques were presented to 102 academic and administrative personnel, who retired in 2017. Dr. Mednan SAÇAKLI, who retired in 2017 and passed away in September, was also remembered. His plaque was presented to his family. Also, certificates were presented to 80 academic and administrative personnel for their 30th and 40th anniversary at the university. The ceremony continued with the concert of Istanbul Technical University Dr. Erol Üçer Advanced Music Studies Center. The meeting ended with the complimentary at the foyer.
